In 2015, a group of kindred spirits found themselves drawn to the tranquil embrace of Bambolim beach every Sunday morning. These individuals shared a common passion - open water swimming. Little did they know that this simple gathering would sow the seeds of what would later become the Goa Open Water Swimming Club (GOWSC).
"At the beginning, we were just a small group of enthusiasts," reminisces Elias Patel, one of the co-founders. "Our main goal was to enjoy the freedom of sea swimming, but as more people joined us, we realised we had an opportunity to share our love for the ocean with others." The three co-founders have since steadily been working to create a healthy and vibrant community in Goa.
The club's offerings are as diverse as its participants. From comprehensive 90-minute sea swimming introduction courses to immersive residential camps catering to various skill levels, GOWSC ensures that there's something for everyone. However, it's their distinctive "destination swims" that truly set them apart. These excursions allow participants to not only savour the joy of swimming in different locales but also to appreciate the marine ecosystems unique to each beach.
This year, the club is expanding its reach, engaging with schools to instill a love for the sea among young minds. They are also set to begin an elite camp for advanced sea swimmers, an initiative that promises to be a pioneering effort in the country.
Over the years, Goa has evolved into a hub for water sports, and open water swimming has become a popular pursuit. In fact, GOWSC has transformed from a modest assembly of 10 individuals to a thriving community of over 2000 followers.
From novices eager to explore the joy of open water swimming to seasoned swimmers seeking to challenge themselves, GOWSC caters to all.
In fact, the club's reputation transcends Goa's borders. Swimmers from Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Pune, and even smaller towns flock to GOWSC, drawn by the pristine beaches and the club's dedication to safety.
"Swimmers fly in for Sunday morning swims and return the same day, showcasing remarkable commitment. Their trust stems from our emphasis on safety, well-being, and our ability to ease their worries, enabling them to relish the sea confidently through our expertise," says co-founder Meenal Kansara. "We alleviate their concerns, share our knowledge, and create an environment where they can enjoy the sea without fear."
"Respecting the sea is our mantra," reiterates Patel. And the club equips participants with vital knowledge, teaching them to remain calm and composed in challenging situations. With an array of safety measures, including kayaks, rescue boards, jetskis, boats, and state-appointed lifeguards, the club ensures that every swim is not just exhilarating but secure.
Looking forward, GOWSC envisions itself as a comprehensive hub for sea swimming. Promoting clean and family-oriented tourism through their camps, the club aims to attract a broader demographic, making open water swimming accessible to all.
In their commitment to spreading the joy of sea swimming, the club warmly extends an invitation to locals, urging them to join this enriching experience. With the backdrop of the incredibly beautiful coastline, it's an opportunity for individuals to connect with the ocean in a meaningful way.
"Beyond fostering a love for the sea, the club is dedicated to nurturing Goan talent. By creating employment opportunities for skilled local swimmers, particularly the youth, we're not only transforming passions into professions but also empowering the next generation to thrive in an environment that supports their aspirations," says co-founder
Nicole Pavri.
