It was an evening of fun and learning at Musuem of Goa, as Niketa Malhotra founder of The Indian Draping Company threw light on the saree – one of the world’’s oldest garments. Through a presentation, she explained the diversity of sarees one can find across the country besides showing pictures of the various ways sarees are draped in different parts of the country.
She spoke about how a saree can be draped and used in various forms. Speaking about the handloom sarees she said: “It keeps you warm in the cold and keeps you cool in the warm weather which makes it an ideal garment.” She also said that a saree should be draped as per one’’s wishes and is a perfect garment to express one’’s identity.
At the workshop she showed the participants three ways of draping the saree. This included the Goan Kunbi way, the dhoti saree and the skirt saree. Besides, she also showed with demonstration how there could be variations used while draping the saree that are offbeat and very contemporary. Participants at the workshop, especially foreign nationals were amused with the drapes and were happy to learn ways in which the garment that varies in length can be used in various ways.
