Staff Reporter

Continued on P 10

During the drive, people will be incentivised to donate their e-waste through emotional campaigns and corporate and school tie-ups. The campaign will be activated across various districts of India and create a national impact in the process of e-waste management

Five coordinators have been appointed to oversee the e-waste collection in the state - Jaiamol Naik in Vasco; Raies Ahmed and Ashwin Karpe for Calangute and Mapusa; Rahul Verekar in Ponda and Joaquim Gonsalves for Salcete taluka.

In just five years, India recorded a growth of 43% in its e-waste generation - 82% of India's e-waste consists only of personal devices.

Deplorably, only 22.7% of the e-waste was properly destroyed out of the total 10,14,961.

At least 21 tonnes of e-waste generated was collected, dismantled, and recycled or disposed of scientifically.

More than 3.2 million tonnes of e-waste was produced in 2020-21. E-waste generation is expected to rise to 161 million tonnes in the country by 2050.

A majority of the e-waste generated is handled by unorganised sector which disposes of the waste in unscientific manner. As a result, the devalued components are either burnt or dumped in the ocean, Brito explained.

The 'dump and donate' campaign involves reaching out to the masses through various schools, institutions and other mediums to create awareness about e-waste and its harmful impact on health and environment

The campaign called 'dump or donate' will be held from January 13

Margao

The state is poised to see a major push to e-waste collection: 'dump or donate', claimed to be the largest e-waste collection drive in India, will be held in Goa from January 13 to February 13.

The month-long collection drive, which will be carried out by Lions International in association with the Union environment ministry, will be formally launched by Minister for Environment Nilesh Cabral at the VVM Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics, Margao on January 14 at 10.30 a.m.

It is pertinent to note that India is the third largest e-waste generating country in the world.

The 'dump and donate' campaign involves reaching out to the masses through various schools, institutions and other mediums to create awareness about e-waste and its harmful impact on health and environment.

Erle Brito of Lions International told a press conference in Margao that the drive will be held at schools, colleges, corporate offices, panchayats and municipalities.

There will be three collection centres: O Brindao, Navelim; Alaska Bottling, GINA, Chicalim and Senior Citizens Ghar, Naikavaddo in Calangute.
